How long before NCT is due can you test?
90 days
The NCT Regulations allow that a car may be tested up to 90 days in advance of the test due date without affecting the expiry date of the certificate issued. This system is in place to ensure all owners have sufficient time to have their vehicles successfully tested before the current certificate expires.
How long is waiting list for NCT?
The average wait time for an NCT test is now three weeks, according to the National Car Test Service (NCTS).
Is there a grace period for NCT?
According to the NCTS Customer Charter if you request an NCT appointment within 4 weeks and it cannot be provided, you are entitled to have the test carried out for free. If your car fails the test, you must book a re-test within 21 days and the re-test must be completed within 30 days of the original test.
What fails an NCT?
Reasons for failure: Thread worn, distorted or damaged. Thread depth of less than 1.6mm. Incorrectly seated on wheel rim.
Will my car pass NCT with engine light on?
Arriving to an NCT Centre with an illuminated warning light is a serious no no. A lit up airbag warning light spells immediate failure. If your Engine Management light is showing, your NCT inspector might not even conduct the test! Suspension issues are the cause of the majority of NCT fails.
Is NCT backdated?
NCT certificates are not back dated. No provision exists to permit an extension of the period covered by an NCT certificate beyond the next test due date. Voluntary early testing refers to vehicles presented for test more than 90 days in advance of their test due date.
Does a 161 car need an NCT?
Cars up to four years old do not need an NCT. Cars four to nine years old must be tested every second year. Cars ten years and older must be tested every year. It might help to know that the NCT regulations allow for a car to be tested up to 90 days before the due date without affecting the next cert’s expiry date.
Are NCT Centres Open 2021?

Should I wash car before NCT?
