What is P-Tex made of?
P-tex is the abbreviated name for Polyethylene. There are 10 major classifications of Polyethylene. For snowboards and skis the form used is UHMWPE or Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. It’s the same material used to make bullet proof jackets as well as hip and knee replacements.
What is PTEX material?
P-tex is a tradename for the polyethylene base material used on skis and snowboards. Sintered p-tex is made by packing ultra high molecular weight polyethylene powder into a cake that is heated and compressed (sintered) to form a log or billet (see diagram below).
Do you need to wax after PTEX?
Definitely before waxing. As you thought, PTEX candles are made of the same material as the base is made of… so you want the clean the gouge area of any dirt, debris or wax… if you can lightly sand the area to give the new PTEX material some surface to stick on to.
How do you P-TEX your board?
Fill in the Gouge
- Using your propane torch or butane lighter, fire up one tip of the P-Tex candle.
- Wait until it’s flaming (this may take a couple of minutes).
- Move the molten P-Tex candle to the gouge.
- Do a second round if necessary then extinguish the flame.
- Let the P-Tex cool about 15 minutes.
Is there a difference between clear and black PTEX?
There’s different grades of Ptex but if you’re just using the standard candle either or will use and being that the board is black the clear will only have a minimal discoloration.
How do you use PTEX?
Can you use a hot glue gun for PTEX?
No HTML is allowed. they do make hot glue gun like tools for ptex, but you cant really use just a hot glue gun as glue sticks melt at a much lower temp so the guns don’t get very hot.
Is PTEX toxic?
You can also try texturing the inside of the gouge with a file first, this can help the p-tex stick better. Also work somewhere well ventilated because the p-tex smoke is toxic.
Does PTEX stick to metal?
Ptex doesn’t stick to metal very well. a short cut is just to use copolymer. It holds up pretty well. Not as hard are normal ptex but harder than drip stuff.
Why is my PTEX cracking?
Overfilling a deep hole in one hit can cause the ptex to crack. Once the ptex is cool to the touch (5-10 min), you can begin scraping back. Holding your metal scraper at an angle, start scraping from the front to the back of the ski. Vary the direction of each pass, so that you’re removing material evenly.
