When you think of San Francisco icons, the sea lions are up there with the Golden Gate Bridge. They are one of the reasons why PIER 39 is the top attraction in San Francisco. On a typical day, you can find them lounging in the sun or piled on top of each other on K-Dock in PIER 39’s West Marina.
Is it safe to swim in Aquatic Park San Francisco?
The cove is the perfect training area for open water swimming. It’s large enough that even experienced swimmers can rack up as many feet as they want to; safe even for beginners; and fairly protected from rougher currents, tides, and vessel traffic.

Welcome to Open Water Swimming! Our members swim year-round in the waters of Aquatic Park Cove where temperatures vary from about 50 F in January to about 61 F in September. A line of buoys parallel to the shore marks a quarter-mile course.
What do you need to swim in the bay?
You’ll also want a towel, warm clothes to put on after, food or hot tea and coffee for when you get out, and a plastic bag for all your wet stuff. It’s a good idea to swim with a friend or join a group – especially as you get accustomed to the cold water and open water experience.
